The majority of these people are Tswana, an ethnic group who speak a Bantu language, and are also found in larger numbers in South Africa where about 4 million Tswana live. Like many (African) countries, Botswana has a turbulent and violent history, and became one of the poorest countries in the world by the 1960s. However, Botswana has managed to overcome their poverty to a large extent, as it's now one of the strongest and faster growing economies in Africa. Their standard of living is still modest on average though.
