Fiji is a small island nation within the Melanesian part of Oceania. Of its over 300 islands (and over 500 islets), only just over a hundred are inhabited by roughly 1 million people in total. The majority of them live on the two largest islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Since Fiji was formed by volcanic activity, the majority of people live on the coast due to the difficult terrain further inland. This, as well as their tropical location in the South Pacific Ocean, means much of Fiji's industries is based on tourism.
The first people to inhabit what later became known as Fiji are thought to have arrived around 1000 BCE. They were primarily Austronesians and Melanesians, two interconnected groups of peoples who spread to large parts of the Pacific Ocean islands and Indian Ocean, including Madagascar, Taiwan, Papua New Guinea, Easter Island and many, many more.
In the 17th century, Europe became aware of Fiji and initially the majority of contact was through trade, shipwrecked crews ending up on those islands, and explorers seeking to charter these lands. What followed in the centuries after was a lot of turmoil at the hands of Christian missionaries, the claiming of land by Australia and the USA, British colonization, the enslavement of indigenous people, and plenty more far too dense to cover in such a short description. But today, Fiji is a democratic nation and among the most developed and prosperous nations in the Pacific.
Fijian names vary from ethnic group to ethnic group, but also from one person to the next. Surnames aren't a mostly mandatory system of inheritance like in the West, but a more optional system that could have 2 siblings share not a single name between each other. Those without surnames may give their own name to their child as a type of surname, or register a different surname altogether for their child. Registering an additional surname is free in the first 2 months after a birth, for example, but could be done at any point in life.
