Demigods, also referred to as half-bloods and godlings, are the offspring of mortals and gods. Being a half-god grants them supernatural abilities, which includes higher reflexes, strength and they live longer than average humans. But they are not immortal. Additionally, their divinity is not reflected in their appearance as they look as human as any other.
Their powers generally manifest while in their early teens, which comes with the addition of a powerful scent monsters are able to detect. Knowledge of being a demigod strengthens this scent, making it more likely monsters will attack that person. During their teenage years, they will also usually be taken to a summer camp (like Camp Half-Blood for demigods born of Greek deities), which serves as a safe haven thanks to magical protections. Quests given to demigods can take them away from this haven, however.
Demigod names are mostly just regular names people would have in real life. Fans have made many connections between a character's name and their parent, which also happens in the book at times. Connor and Travis Stoll, for example, have a surname that sounds like the word stole. They're children of the god Hermes, and Hermes is the god of thieves. Lee Fletcher and Michael Yew can both be tied to fletching and a wood commonly used in fletching, both also being children of the god Apollo, god of Archery.
However, according to the author himself, he also picks names simply because he likes them and thinks will sound good in the book. The name Grover, for example, he notes as being uncertain of why he picked it, but guesses Sesame Street. Shout-outs to real life people are also done on occasion.
