They can shapeshift between a beautiful human form and their true form. In their true form, they have hair of fire, pale skin, glowing red eyes, large fangs, one goat leg, and one prosthetic leg made of Celestial Bronze, a metal capable of wounding demigods while leaving mortals entirely unaffected.
On top of this, they have magical abilities including charmspeak, which allows them to cast charming spells on people through their speech, the ability to manipulate the mists around them, and some, usually older empousai can teleport through flames.
There are four named empousai within the books: Arielle, Kelli, Serephone, and Tammi. If we look at the meanings of their names or closest names in real life, you find the following: Ariel means lion of god, Kelli means bright-headed, war and strife, Seraphine means flaming/glowing, and Tamar means date palm. Date palms, when in fruit, has great bundles of orange to red fruit that could be a reference to an empousa's flaming hair. Could these names and their related meanings be a coincidence? Definitely.
