Gnolls are humanoid hyenas who tend to be between 6 and 7 feet. Female gnolls are often a head taller and stronger than males. A council of female gnolls who choose a Chief Elder to rule the entire gnoll clan. A clan usually ranges between 100 to 200 members consisting of 10-20 family groups. In addition to a Chief Elder, each clan has a Bonekeeper and a Storyteller. The role of a Bonekeeper is to appease the gods and the ancestors. Storytellers are teachers and sages who keep with them the entire history of their clan, any lore pertaining to their lands, as well as other information important to the clan.
Gnoll names consist of a root name given at birth and often passed down through family lines, with additional names added at important milestones throughout their lives. The root name is usually the name of an animal (but never hyena), a plant or a bone.
