As with virtually all stories of colonialism, this isn't a happy one. Turmoil, war, and greed led to bloodshed, barbaric acts, and destruction, much of its effects are still felt to this day.
Afrikaans names are mostly Dutch, but are often slightly different from modern Dutch names. There are some French and German influences as well, and some other cultural influences too, including some African languages, but the vast majority have their roots in the Dutch language used at the time.
